To Procrastinate or Not to Procrastinate

As we approach the end of the semester I feel the stress levels rising all around me. You can always tell the student who has been on top of his/her studies throughout the semester from those who have not based

Meeting Joan Traumpauer Mulholland- a freedom rider

Often as a student affairs professional the work day rarely turns out as you expect.  March 4, 2013 was one of these types of days.  On this date I planned to use the morning to finalizing plans for an RA

What, to the American Slave [and American Descendants of Slaves], is your #4thofJuly? *** Note, Frederica Douglass made his famous “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” Speech on July 5th while Chattel Slavery was still going on... He never honored the July 4th holiday because it was never about his people, Black people! *** A response I wrote to folks making claims against folx protesting with Kap or boycotting July 4th, the National Anthem and American Flag: American Descendants of Slaves (ADOS) were not free on July 4, 1776. Chattel slavery of my ancestors was still going strong. ADOS were not free until June 16 1865 (almost 100 years later), and between 1776 and 1865 all ADOS were considered 3/5 a person by the 3/5 Compromise. So, if you immigrated to the US of your own free will, are not a Descendent of Abolitionists or are an American Descendent of Slave Owners, your perspective on people choosing not to celebrate July 4th is of little consequence to those still living with the vestiges of slavery. *** Second, both the National Anthem (1814) and American Flag (1777) have complicated histories with racism, slavery and ADOS; they are not symbols that truly represent the values of equality for all— especially for the First Tribes and ADOS. As they were created to mark successful colonization while Chattel Slavery was still alive and thriving. US History classes do a grave disservice by teaching mostly an one-sided history. #ImwithKap *** #FourthofJuly #USHistory #BlackHistorySummer #BlackHistory365

All of this. ALL. OF. THIS. Let’s cure the disease! ••• #Repost @mspackyetti: it is cute to say that Donald Trump is our greatest threat. but that doesn’t make it true. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ as we progress in this election, let’s be clear: the systems and structures that created and enabled Donald Trump are the thing we must defeat. this election is just a step in that process-but any candidate who only treats the symptoms and not the disease should not be our candidate. period. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ is Trump an absolute, real life threat right now, today, for people all over the world? ABSOLUTELY. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ but if we do not remain focused on the systemic pathologies that made it possible for him to exist, another Donald Trump will emerge. and another. and another. and all the mini Donald Trumps that run states and cities and towns and companies will continue to run rampant. that ain’t freedom. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ i get it. i get that we desire a single nemesis. that we want a clear, discernible villain to rage against. that we want to be the superheroes of our own story and defeat the enemy in 90 minutes or less. but that’s the movies. this is real life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ and here, in the real world, we have to be disciplined enough to know that our challenges are more complex, and our solutions will require more vision, more discipline, more boldness, more courage, more nuance. we can and will be the heroes of our own story-as long as we stay real about what that takes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ yeah. DJT is a threat. but he’s the symptom. I want to kill the disease. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❤️✊🏾
The celebratory toast. Congrats @friendsofangelariley on the primary victory today! Onward to the General Election. #YourVoteMatters
