About

Image of Tanyah Barnes This blog will contain the random musings of my mind or simply my reactions to the world around me.  I love to share food for thought or stir up a good debate.  I am interested in a variety of topics that mainly center around feminism/femininity, diversity, technology, social justice, equality, faith, higher education, and student affairs.  I hope you enjoy and come back often!

Who is Tanyah Barnes?

I am a native Floridian, some would say a Southern Gal,  living in the Northeast- for now!  I am a creative being that loves to read, sometimes write, but always watch and listen!  I am often described as a woman, sister, daughter, BBW, mentor, friend, advisor, advocate, techie, DIYer, dreamer, event planner, go-getter, graphic designer, web-designer, plus-sized princess and Student Affairs Professional.  My heart cries out for peace, love, and service of others.  If you ask me- I  am a dynamic, passionate and complicated piece of music that leaves your ears and soul wanting more!

I am an alum of the University of Florida (Go Gators) and the University of South Florida (Go Bulls).  I am an active member of the Apalachin Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

I currently work (day job) at Binghamton University (Go Bearcats) as Diversity Fellow in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. As a professional I have also worked in Residential Life, Graduate School recruitment, Civic Engagement, Communications & Marketing, Educational Opportunity Program,  Fraternity & Sorority Life,  Interpersonal Violence Prevention, and Parent and Family Programs.  I have worked as a student affairs professional for about seven years and have loved every moment of it.  My passions are diversity programming, advising, distance learning, leadership & development, student activities, student affairs and technology (marketing/tech/branding), and transition programs.

I also work as a graphic designer for Noelle Ivey Designs and consult with CeCe Olisa as Admin for #PSPfit, a healthy lifestyle challenge for plus-sized women.  Contact me at fitness@thebiggirlblog.com or visit pspfit.com for more information.

Yesterday was Herstory Making in so many ways! The glass ceiling continues to shatter as women, especially black women rise to elected power. FL may not have Brought It Home this year, but we passed Amendment 4. Then NY elected Letitia James as the 1st Black Attorney General and Alexandria Cortez as the youngest Congresswoman. Today is still a very good day! #YourVoteMatters #BMCMovement
Of course I voted, i’m a Delta. In April I was all set to switch my registration to NY, but Gillum. I am so proud that I had the chance to grab ‘em by the #Midterms and vote to #BringItHome. I voted early by mail and even paid express shipping to make sure my ballot arrived on time with proof of delivery. Have you voted? #GoVote #Nov6 #YourVoteMatters #StopVoterSuppression #iVoted #BMCMovement #HistoryMakers #GatorsforGillum
There’s still time! Polls are still open in many states. If you are in line by closing time, you can VOTE! There’s so much at stake. • • • #WhatsatStake18 #VOTE #VoteTODAY #Nov6 #BMCMovement 🗳 📸: @bmcmovement

Happy Black Solidarity Day! This morning my @mrcbinghamton and @bsu1968 planted approximately 900 flags with the names of black lives taken by police violence. Tomorrow we encourage you to vote with Criminal Justice Reform in mind. • • • The Multicultural Resource Center and Black Student Union encourages the Binghamton University campus community to wear all black on Monday, Nov. 5, in honor of Black Solidarity Day. • • • You are also invited to attend a short Day of Absence Program honoring the history of Black Solidarity Day, the importance of unity and the lives lost throughout its’ 49 year history at noon, Monday, Nov. 5th at the Pegasus Statue on the Spine or outside the Downtown Center. Following the memorial BSU will host the annual Black Solidarity Day celebration, at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in the UU-Mandela Room. This year’s theme is “Black Festival: Celebrating 50 Years of Unity.” #BlackSolidarityDay #ForTheCulture #BlackLivesMatter #Vote #Nov6
