About

Image of Tanyah Barnes This blog will contain the random musings of my mind or simply my reactions to the world around me.  I love to share food for thought or stir up a good debate.  I am interested in a variety of topics that mainly center around feminism/femininity, diversity, technology, social justice, equality, faith, higher education, and student affairs.  I hope you enjoy and come back often!

Who is Tanyah Barnes?

I am a native Floridian, some would say a Southern Gal,  living in the Northeast- for now!  I am a creative being that loves to read, sometimes write, but always watch and listen!  I am often described as a woman, sister, daughter, BBW, mentor, friend, advisor, advocate, techie, DIYer, dreamer, event planner, go-getter, graphic designer, web-designer, plus-sized princess and Student Affairs Professional.  My heart cries out for peace, love, and service of others.  If you ask me- I  am a dynamic, passionate and complicated piece of music that leaves your ears and soul wanting more!

I am an alum of the University of Florida (Go Gators) and the University of South Florida (Go Bulls).  I am an active member of the Apalachin Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

I currently work (day job) at Binghamton University (Go Bearcats) as Diversity Fellow in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. As a professional I have also worked in Residential Life, Graduate School recruitment, Civic Engagement, Communications & Marketing, Educational Opportunity Program,  Fraternity & Sorority Life,  Interpersonal Violence Prevention, and Parent and Family Programs.  I have worked as a student affairs professional for about seven years and have loved every moment of it.  My passions are diversity programming, advising, distance learning, leadership & development, student activities, student affairs and technology (marketing/tech/branding), and transition programs.

I also work as a graphic designer for Noelle Ivey Designs and consult with CeCe Olisa as Admin for #PSPfit, a healthy lifestyle challenge for plus-sized women.  Contact me at fitness@thebiggirlblog.com or visit pspfit.com for more information.

The highlight of my first @cbcfinc Annual Legislative Conference was the @bmcmovement Unbought & Unbossed Brunch, honoring the 50th Anniversary of my Soror Shirley Chisholm’s historic victory, moderated by @erikaalexanderthegreat. From surprising @jehmu with an award to listening to a panel full of #BlackGirlMagic millennial leaders— it brought me to tears. I admire all of the black women on the panel who continue to claim space, fight and stay true to self despite the insurmountable odds in the entertainment, political and policy arenas. It was so hard not to stan, so I didn’t get an individual with Erika— but kicking it with her was a phenomenal experience. She is so much more than Maxine Shaw the Maverick, hearing her lessons and stories truly left me Awh inspired of her knowledge, wisdom and commitment to representation! #BMCatCBC #BMCmovement #ForThePeople #CBCALC18 #UnboughtandUnbossed #shirleychisholm
Fan diva moment — when you run into the dynamic Soror Past National President, Past Southern Region Director, and one of my @tampadeltas1947 favorites, Dr. Paulette Walker at #CBCFALC18. I still remember Dr. Walker’s lessons on the best of Delta business from way back in 2002. AOML... #redalert #dst1913

“Trust only movement. Life happens at the level of events, not words.” -Lifehack. — Creativity, civic action and service are a few of my passions and I got to lean in on them in this simple design via my passion project, @noelle_ivey for Protecting Our Vote Pac. Geeking out because this design was for an event with @vp44, @repjimclyburn, @repcedricrichmond and my soror @repmarciafudge. All thanks to my amazing soror, Adjoa Asamoah. —Voting and empowering others to vote is a lesson my late grandmother Geraldine Barnes worked tirelessly to impart on her community. I can’t help but feel that today she would be proud. #GraphicDesign #Gratitude #ProtectingOurVote #Proactivist
